"A ruthless businessman once said to author Mark Twain, "Before I die I mean to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. I will climb Mount Sinai and read the Ten Commandments aloud from the top."

"I have a better idea," Twain remarked, "You could stay home here and keep them."

Talk is cheap. It's what we do that counts not what we say and when our words don't match our actions, we are, as the Apostle Paul put it, as empty vessels and clanging symbols.

One of the best lessons I learned from one of my many teachers was the written comment he seemed to relish writing in bold red letters in the column of several of my written assignments. It read, "Show me. Don't tell me!"

I've never forgotten that lesson. It really applies to all of life's lessons we want to impart to others ­especially to our children! Whatever we want to teach others we need to model ourselves before we can make any lasting impact on anybody else, otherwise what we say is unbelievable and the only person we deceive in the long run will be ourselves.

As a general rule, we teach best that which we ourselves most need to learn. And the place to begin modeling what we want to teach? At home!

Suggested prayer: "Dear God, help me to model the kind of person you want me to be. . .a better father/mother/child . . .friend. . . partner. . .business person. . .Christian so people seeing what you have done in my life will want the same for themselves. Gratefully in Jesus' name."

Just for today! I will begin the day by praying: "This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." (Psalm 118:24)

Just for today! I will say, "I can do everything through Him who gives me strength." (Philippians 4:13)

Just for today! I will not worry about my needs, for "...my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19)

Just for today! I will not fear, "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity; but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline." (II Timothy 1:7)

Just for today! I will not harbor doubt and lack faith, for "...without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." (Hebrews 11:6)

Just for today! I will not lack strength, for "...the Lord is the stronghold of my life - of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1b)

Just for today! I will not admit defeat, for God "...always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ, ..." (II Corinthians 2:14b)

Just for today! I will not lack wisdom, for, "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask Cod, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." (James 1:5)

Just for today! I will not feel condemned, for "..., there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." (Romans 8:1)

Just for today! I will not be worried or frustrated: "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." (I Peter 5:7)

Just for today! I will not be depressed, "...for his compassion's never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22b,23)

Just for today! I will not feel alone for Jesus said, "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:20b)

Just for today! I will not be discontented, "...for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances." (Philippians 4:llb)

Just for today! I will not feel worthless, for "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." (II Corinthians 5:21)

Just for today! I will not be confused, "For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace…" (I Corinthians 14:33a KJV)

Just for today! I will not let the pressures of life bother me, when Christ said, "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33b)

Just for today! I will not feel like a failure, when "…in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us." (Romans 8:37)

There was a blackout one night. When the lights went out, I fumbled to the closet where we keep the candles for nights like this. I lit four of them. I was turning to leave with the large candle in my hand when I heard a voice, "Now, hold it right here."

"Who said that?"
"I did." The voice was near my hand.
"Who are you? What are you?"
"I'm a candle."

I lifted up the candle to take a closer look.
There was a tiny face in the wax.

"Don't take me out of here!"
"What?"
"I said, Don't take me out of this room."
"What do you mean? I have to take you out. You're a candle.
Your job is to give light. It's dark out there."

"But you can't take me out. I'm not ready," the candle explained with pleading eyes.

"I need more preparation."

I couldn't believe my ears. "More preparation?"
"Yeah, I've decided I need to research this job of light-giving so I won't go out and make a bunch of mistakes. You'd be surprised how distorted the glow of an untrained candle can be...."

"All right then," I said.
"You're not the only candle on the shelf.
I'll blow you out and take the others!"
But right then I heard other voices,

"We aren't going either!"

I turned to the other candles,
"You are candles and your job is to light dark places!"

"Well, that may be what you think," said the first one,
"You may think we have to go, but I'm busy...
I'm meditating on the importance of light. It's really enlightening."...

"And you other two," I asked, "are you going to stay too?"
A short, fat, purple candle with plump cheeks spoke up. "I'm waiting to get my life together, I'm not stable enough."

The last candle had a female voice, very pleasant to the ear.
"I'd like to help, "she explained, "but lighting the darkness is not my gift...I'm a singer. I sing to other candles to encourage them to burn more brightly."

She began a rendition of "This Little Light of Mine" The other three joined in, filling the closet with singing....I took a step back and considered the absurdity of it all. Four perfectly healthy candles singing to each other about light but refusing to come out of the closet.


Here is a question for you, when was the last time you shared the gospel to someone? This world is full of darkness, with many people stumbling around trying to find their way. You can be a light for them, and believe me, there's a light waiting for you. It can all happen with something as sharing the faith, to just a smile across the room, to a quick hello to a forgotten friend.

"Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a lamp, and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand; and it giveth light to all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."

Make a right turn onto "Believers Boulevard" keep straight and go on through the light (its always green) that is Jesus Christ.

From there, you must turn onto the "Bridge of Faith," which is over troubled water.

When you get off the bridge make that right turn and keep straight. You are now on the "King's Highway" keep going, you'll pass three markers, one is for the Father, one is for the Son and one is for the Holy Spirit.

Exit off onto "Grace Boulevard" make a right turn onto "Fellowship Lane" keep straight until you get to "Prayer Boulevard," make another right turn, as you go on your way.

Yield not to the traffic on "Temptation Avenue" don't take that shortcut down "Sin Street" because it is a dead end! Bypass "Envy Drive" "Backbiting Boulevard" and "Have Avenue."

You'll only waste precious time. Don't get lost on "Hypocrisy Street" or "Abuse Avenue" that's a bad neighborhood. But most likely you will have to travel "Long-suffering Lane," "Persecution Plaza" and Trials and Tribulations Road," they are available, but stay on course, because VICTORY BOULEVARD is straight ahead.

To my dearest family, some things I’d like to say, but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay. I’m writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.

Here, there’s no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love. Please do not be unhappy, just because I’m out of sight. Remember that I’m with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you, when my life on earth was through, God picked me up and hugged me, and He said, “I welcome you.”

It’s good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone. As for your dearest family, they’ll be here later on. I need you here badly; you’re part of my plan.

There’s so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.” God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do. And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

And when you lie in bed at night, the day’s chores put to flight. God and I are closest to you, in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years, because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain. Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain. I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.

But if I were to tell you, you wouldn’t understand. But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o’er. I’m closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you, and many hills to climb; but together we can do it, by taking one day at a time. It was always my philosophy and I’d like it for you too, that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who’s in sorrow and pain, then you can say to God at night, ”My day was not in vain.”

And now I am contented, that my life has been worthwhile, knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile. So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low, just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.

When you’re walking down the street, and you’ve got me on your mind; I’m walking in your footsteps, only half a step behind. And when it’s time for you to go, from that body to be free, remember you’re not going, you’re coming here to me.

1. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

2. Memorize your favorite poem.

3. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.

4. When you say, "I love you", mean it.

5. When you say, "I'm sorry", look the person in the eye.

6. Be engaged at least six months before you get married.

7. Believe in love at first sight.

8. Never laugh at anyone's dreams.

9. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.

10. In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.

11. Don't judge people by their relatives.

12. Talk slow but think quick.

13. When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, "Why do you want to know?".

14. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

15. Call your mom.

16. Say "bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.

17. When you lose, don't lose the lesson.

18. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; Responsibility for all your actions.

19. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

20. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

21. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.

22. Marry a man you love to talk to. As you get older, his conversational skills will be as important as any other.

23. Spend some time alone.

24. Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.

25. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

26. Read more books and watch less TV.

27. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll get to enjoy it a second time.

28. Trust in God but lock your car.

29. A loving atmosphere in your home is so important. Do all you can to create a tranquil harmonious home.

30. In disagreements with loved ones, deal with the current situation. Don't bring up the past.

31. Read between the lines.

32. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.

33. Be gentle with the earth.

34. Pray. There's immeasurable power in it.

35. Never interrupt when you are being flattered.

36. Mind your own business.

37. Don't trust a man who doesn't close his eyes when you kiss him.

38. Once a year, go someplace you've never been before.

39. If you make a lot of money, put it to use helping others while you are living. That is wealth's greatest satisfaction.

40. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a stroke of luck

41. Learn the rules then break some.

42. Remember that the best relationship is one where your love for each other is greater than your need for each other.

43. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

1. Self-will turned Paradise into a desert.
It has been well said, "My will NOT Thine be done, turned Paradise into a desert. Thy will not Mine be done, turned the desert into a Paradise." Romans 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Because our Lord Jesus was obedient in all things, willing to go to the cross for our sakes, and to do the Father's will, we have redemption. In Luke 22:42, He said, "Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done."

2. Self-will is the mother of sin.
Isaiah records the sin of Lucifer where in his heart he said, "I will"-- Isaiah 14:12,13: How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north.

"I will"...This is illustrated in Cain, when he in self-will came to God in his own way instead of God's way, and was jealous because Abel's sacrifice was accepted and his was rejected, which jealousy led him to kill his brother. "Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous." (1 John 3:12)

3. Self-will is the forerunner of disaster.
Lot chose the well-watered plain of Sodom, but he lost all he had in Sodom, and only escaped with his life (See Genesis 13:10).

4. Self-will shuts out from blessing.
Moses struck the rock twice-- when God told him to speak to it, and was shut out of the Promised Land in consequence. That Rock symbolized Christ. Numbers 20:11,12 says: And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also. And the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

5. Self-will brings punishment.
King Saul, through pride and disobedience lost his kingdom and the favor of God through consulting his own will in opposition to God's Word, when God told him to destroy ALL the Amalekites. (1 Samuel 15:23). Saul forgot that it was God who made him king over the people, he refused to obey the Lord and because of his transgression was removed out of his place.

6. Self-will brings injury to others.
Pharaoh of Egypt would not let the children of Israel go. His own people begged him to release the Israelites but he refused until his own land was devestated by plagues and the first-born of every house in Egypt died as a consequence. Pharaoh was a man filled with pride and self-will. He saw the power of God-- and he refused to obey the Lord and so God hardened his heart some more. Pride always goes before a fall and self-will accompanies pride.

Exodus 10:1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh: for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might show these my signs before him.

Exodus 10:7 And Pharaoh's servants said unto him, How long shall this man be a snare unto us? let the men go, that they may serve the LORD their God: knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed?

In the end, he lost his wealth, his first-born son, and his army.

7. Self-will means a loss of blessing.
The prodical son learned the hard way the difference between the swine troughs and the father's table, and between the far country and the homestead. (Luke 15:16,17). There is forgiveness with God, as with the case of the prodical son, but he still had reaped what he had sown and discovered that self-will leads to a loss of blessings and wasted years. As Believers in Christ, we are not under wrath but under grace, but we too can forfeit many blessings simply by not yielding to God.

Conclusion:

We could go on and on with examples in the Bible of the Kings of Israel and Judah, who were rebellious in self-will. Not to mention Jonah, who learned the hard way, the consequences of self-will. Barnes writes in his commentary concerning Jonah:

"...he acted, as people often do, who dislike God’s commands. He set about removing himself as far as possible from being under the influence of God, and from the place where he “could” fulfill them. God commanded him to go to Nineveh, which lay northeast from his home; and he instantly set himself to flee to the then furthermost west. Holy Scripture sets the rebellion before us in its full nakedness. “The word of the Lord came unto Jonah, go to Nineveh, and Jonah rose up;” he did something instantly, as the consequence of God’s command. He “rose up,” not as other prophets, to obey, but to disobey; and that, not slowly nor irresolutely, but “to flee, from” standing “before the Lord.”

After being swallowed up by the great fish, Jonah repented of his sin in the belly of the fish and God had mercy upon the prophet and the great fish spit Jonah out...but he learned the hard way that self-will is a sin. When we say, "my will," in opposition to God's will, it is a very dangerous condition of the heart. Yet our blessed Savior-- the Lord Jesus Christ, was obedient to the Father in all things: "My meat is to do the will of Him who sent me, and to finish His work." And the Book of Romans tell us to yield ourselves unto God:

Romans 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

And it is God who empowers us, as Believers in Christ, to do His will: Hebrews 13:21: Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Let us always pray in the manner in which the Lord Jesus taught us: "Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven..."

with the hope and confidence of the Master;

To be a leader is to be naive--to believe the very best ...of all people in the love and acceptance of our Savior;

To be a leader is to be trusting--to disregard dire projections of gloom for the joy
and creativity of our Creator;

To be a leader is to be honest--to own our sinfulness with the sincerity and
authenticity of the Spirit;

To be a leader is to be unique--to accept the wonderful gift of self, in the knowledge
and understanding of community;

To be a leader is to be free--to welcome recurring waves of change with the awe and
wonder of a child;

To be a leader is to be empowering--to share the exhilarating power of information in
the establishment of inter-connectedness;

To be a leader is to be humble--to give the inestimable gift of flexibility with the
grace and forgiveness of God;

To be a leader is to be whole--to know the startling reality that I am central, yet
peripheral, in God's plan for the world;

To be a leader is to be weak--to understand that I can rest in the hollow of God's hand
only in the total yielding and complete trusting of my child's heart.

A lighthouse guides,
A lighthouse warns of rocks, reefs, and currents.
A lighthouse serves as a beacon,
A beacon to guide others safely into port.

A lighthouse is built from strong material,
And reinforced with even stronger materials,
So that it may stand up to the all that may happen to it.
A lighthouse may vary in size, shape, or color.

A lighthouse gives off a light for all,
A light that will be bent by a lens into a powerful central beam,
So that it may shine a bright light to all things around it.
There is a keeper lives in the lighthouse,

To keep it clean and maintain it,
So that it may be tall and strong.
For a lighthouse is built high,
So that it may shine the light to as much as possible.

A coast needs to be lined with lighthouses,
So that the four corners of the world shall be safe,
And there may be light where there is only dark.
For God tells us to be a lighthouse for him,

So that we may shine the light to all,
And bring everyone into his harbor.

There it is. Now it's gone. A chance to do something, say something, make a difference, or make no difference at all except for having the chance and taking it.

I call them the "Shoulda Dones."

I shoulda done this or I shoulda done that.

I often talk about living life fully. Making every moment count. I tell you not to live this day as if it were your last, but to live it like it was the first day. A day so full of surprise and opportunity that the mere thought of having another day, makes you jump out of bed excited.

I love the "stop and smell the roses" people.

I love to read about people who saw a need and decided to fill it.

I rejoice in the stories I read about people who stopped running the rat race and did what they loved to do.

I remind you to always kiss them goodnight, tell them "I love you!," say "thanks" and mean it and smile, really smile a lot.

Today will bring you many chances to...

o Say "I love you" or "Thank you!"

o Stop what you are doing and do something silly

o Buy flowers and give them away to strangers

o Pay for a stranger's breakfast

o Run ahead to hold the door

o Let a driver cut in front of you

o Call a friend you haven't spoken with in a long time

o Check on a neighbor

o Paint, write, or sing out loud

o Dance to the music in the mall

Life was meant to be LIVED...not worried about, stressed over, endured. Hard times come...but they also go. The constant is that for the time we have here...LIVE your life, and make it pleasing to the one who gave HIS life for you...The one who offers you eternal life.

JESUS loves you, wants you to be happy, and most importantly wants to be with you forever...Just choose to accept , follow, live for HIM...don't make that choice a "Shoulda Done"... DO!!! BE Blessed

Are you a real Christian or just a church-goer? Please don’t think they are the same. Remember this eternal truth from the Lord:

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven (Mt. 7:21).

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that a Christian is one who gets dressed up, goes inside a building commonly called a “church” and sits through a sermon! Many that will go to Hell do this every week, but don’t possess an obedient faith in Christ needed to enter God’s Kingdom.

So how does the Bible describe the real Christian between initial and final salvation? Is his life now, because of grace, one in which he can sit back, relax, pursue the pleasures of this world and even start to live again according to the sinful nature with no possible hindrance to his personal entrance into the kingdom of God? According to the Bible, the Christian in this life now is:

a soldier in a battle (2 Tim. 2:3,4),
a runner in a long distance race (Acts 20:24; 1 Cor. 9:24; etc.),
a worker in a vineyard (Mt. 20:1-16),
a fruit tree required to bear good fruit (John 15:5,6),
a self-denying Jesus follower (Lk. 9:23),
a manager or steward (Mt. 25:14-30),
a witness of Jesus (Acts 1:8, 22; 2 Tim. 2:2; Rev. 2:13),
a wrestler against the forces of darkness (Eph. 6:12),
in a struggle against sin (Heb. 12:4),
an alien-stranger in this world (1 Pet. 1:1, 17; 2:11),
and a servant (or slave) of God (Acts 4:29; 1 Thess. 1:9).

Instead of striving to please God and live holy lives, many people who once believed are now lukewarm, drunkards and sexually immoral with some of them thinking they are guaranteed an entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven because of the false teaching of eternal security. Sadly, that “sin gospel” is embraced by most popular teachers of our apostate day and has adversely affected the church worldwide. It is also one of the greatest threats to holiness, which has lead to untold broken homes, criminal acts and many suicides!

Then there is the rampant problem of divorce and remarriage which has resulted with multitudes of illegitimate marriages, with both parties being adulterous (Mt. 5:32; 19:9; Lk. 16:18; Rom. 7:2,3; etc.). Even many pastors, elders and worship leaders in local congregations are adulterous, according to those Scriptures, with no fear of going to an eternal Hell, in spite of the clarity of Scripture (1 Cor. 6:9,10; Eph. 5:5-7; Rev. 21:8; etc.)

What the world needs today are spiritual leaders who, like John the Baptist, will fearlessly declare God’s truths without concern of repercussions. Rather than thinking of their own ministries they are to be guards over the eternal souls entrusted to them. But very few seem to be this God fearing. Folks, this is serious! We, our loved ones and friends will be affected throughout all eternity by what we are doing now in this short life. Paul shed his blood at least nine different times and spent years in prison in his battle for eternity. In our day, professing “Christians” spend years of their lives in front of TV as they view things that can spiritually defile them and their loved ones!

In closing remember the following, as you assess yourself spiritually:

He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice” (Lk. 8:21).

The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him (1 John 2:4).

Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned (John 5:28,29).

To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life (Rom 2:7).

The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction;

The one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up (Gal 6:8,9).

A man was sleeping at night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light and the Savior appeared. The Lord told the man he had work for him to do and showed him a large rock in front of his cabin. The Lord explained that the man was to push against the rock with all his might.

This the man did, day after day. For many years he toiled from sun up to sun down, his shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock, pushing with all his might. Each night the man returned to his cabin sore and worn out, feeling that his whole day had been spent in vain.

Seeing that the man was showing signs of discouragement, Satan decided to enter the picture by placing thoughts into the man’s mind such as: “You have been pushing against that rock for a long time, and it hasn’t budged. Why kill yourself over this? You are never going to move it.”

Thus giving the man the impression that the task was impossible and that he was a failure, these thoughts discouraged and disheartened the man even more. “Why kill myself over this?” he thought. “I’ll just put in my time, giving just the minimum effort, and that will be good enough.”

And that he planned to do until one day he decided to make it a matter of prayer and take his troubled thoughts to the Lord. “Lord,” he said, “I have labored long and hard in your service, putting all my strength to do that which you have asked. Yet, after all this time, I have not even budged that rock by half a millimeter. What is wrong? Why am I failing?”

To this the Lord responded compassionately, “My friend, when I asked you to serve me and you accepted, I told you that your task was to push against the rock with all your strength, which you have done. Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it. Your task was to push. And now you come to me, with your strength spent, thinking that you have failed. But, is that really so? Look at yourself. Your arms are strong and muscled, your back sinewed and brown, your hands are callused from constant pressure, and your legs have become massive and hard. Through opposition you have grown much and your abilities now surpass that which you used to have. Yet you haven’t moved the rock. But your calling was to be obedient and to push and to exercise your faith and trust in My wisdom. This you have done.

“I, my friend, will now move the rock.”

At times when we hear a word from God, we tend to use our own intellect to decipher what he wants, when actually what God wants is just simple obedience and faith in him…

By all means, exercise the faith that moves mountains, but it is still God who moves the mountains.

God, You call us to obedience everyday. Sometimes, I want to see beyond obedience. I want to know why, how and when. Yet, it is usually long after the obedience that I begin to realize what Your plan was back then. So help me just be obedient for today. I am learning, Lord that by being obedient today, I am stronger for tomorrow. In Jesus‘ Name, AMEN!
