WHY WORRY?

Luke 12:22-23 "Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes."
The other day, which happened to be Black Friday where people had been shopping since 4:00 AM, I went to Wal Mart to buy some supplies. Everyone was in a hurry trying to get that specially priced item that had been advertise for weeks in the local paper. It was at that time that I happened to look up to the sky and noticed two birds sitting high above the road on an electric wire that ran across the street. The birds were sitting right next to each other. As I approached the intersection the light turned red. As I sat in my van waiting for the light to change it gave me more time to observe the two birds. They were two grackles and they seem to be cuddling as if they were two lovebirds. But the more I observed them the more I noticed that they seemed to be observing the people below. One would look to the right and no sooner would the second one look to the right. Then the other would look down and then the second one would look down. It seemed like each turn of the head was mimicked by the other. It also seemed like they were observing the crazy world of humans rushing around, worrying about whether they were going to make it to that next great bargain just around the corner.
They seemed not to have a care in the world. I guess in many ways, that was the way they were created. The birds of the air and the fish of the sea and the animals of the ground were all created to trust God and not worry. We, on the other hand, who should be above the animals, have the capacity to reason and to know God the Creator in a greater way, yet we of all His creation seem to worry more about the things that the other creatures do not. We worry more about the food we need to eat and the clothes we need to wear. We worry more about those things we need on a daily basis to survive. This was what Jesus meant when He said, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes." So next time you start to worry and lose control, remember my two grackle friends hanging out on an electric line laughing at us and the crazy things we do.
